On April 3, 2015, Dr. Yong Zhao will share his research-based perspectives on education reform efforts and strategies around the globe—and describe specific models that are the most relevant, helpful, and engaging. He will provide a road map for preparing today’s students to become successful entrepreneurial citizens. As Dr. Zhao notes, “As traditional routine jobs are off-shored and automated, we need more and more globally competent, creative, innovative, entrepreneurial students…We need an education that enhances individual strengths, follows children’s passions, and fosters their social-emotional development…” Dr. Zhao is an international scholar, prolific author, and lively speaker who is both passionate and articulate about the need for innovative schools.
In 2012, Tech and Learn magazine named Yong Zhao one of the ten most influential people in educational technology. A highly engaging presenter, Dr. Zhao also designs innovative schools that support students’ success in the context of globalization and the digital revolution. He has published over 100 articles and twenty books, including Catching Up or Leading the Way: American Education in the Age of Globalization (2009); World Class Learners: Educating Creative and Entrepreneurial Students (2012); and Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Dragon: Why China Has the Best (and Worst) Education System in the World (2014).
Dr. Zhao holds a B.A. from the Sichuan Institute in China and earned his master’s degree and PhD from the University of Illinois. He currently serves as a Professor and the Presidential Chair and Director of the Institute for Global and Online Education in the University of Oregon’s College of Education. Previously he was a Professor at Michigan State University’s College of Education where he also served as the Director of the Center for Teaching and Technology and the Executive Director of the US-China Center for Research on Educational Excellence.
